One of our clients gave birth to a baby boy on Sunday, 9/2. She has health insurance through her employer, but her husband and daughter have an individual Colorado health insurance policy through our agency. She called me on Wednesday to see about adding the new baby to her husband’s policy, since it will cost about a quarter of what it would cost to add him to her employer-sponsored policy. I told her I’d take care of it for her.
I called the health insurance company and asked them to add the baby, which is a very easy process in Colorado as long as it’s done within 31 days of the birth. But… the nice lady I was talking with told me that the policy is only paid up until 9/1/07, so nothing can be done with it until it’s paid up to date. Ok, but isn’t this policy on automatic draft payment? Why, yes it is, and the premium for September will be drafted tonight, so as of tomorrow it will be paid up through the end of September. So could I call back tomorrow to go through the process again and get the baby added? Well, yes I can, because that’s my job and I don’t mind doing it. But it’s a good thing it was me calling instead of a sleep-deprived new parent who might not have seen the humor here.
